What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening, sometimes known as “bleaching,” is a common dental procedure. According to the FDA, “whitening” restores natural tooth color and “bleaching” whitens beyond the natural color. There are many different ways to do this. At Laser Partners, we use L.E.D. accelerated carbamide peroxide trays which we believe are the best choice for our patients.
How does it work?
Carbamide peroxide reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide. Pure hydrogen peroxide would create tooth sensitivity and irritate gums, but carbamide peroxide is much gentler on teeth. The carbamide peroxide, partnered with a blue L.E.D. light, penetrates the pores of the tooth’s enamel and breaks down the stain deposits. The light is used to accelerate the process and make it quicker and more efficient.
Why do teeth stain?
Everyone will experience some degree of teeth staining or darkening as they age. This is a natural process that tends to speed up after age 50. However, there are other reasons that can cause teeth to stain earlier on. Some of the most common causes are:
- Drinking dark colored liquids like tea, coffee, red wine, or cola
- Eating dark colored foods like berries, beets, or chocolate
- Smoking and tobacco
- Some antibiotics (tetracycline)
- Poor dental hygiene
How do I prepare for my appointment?
Brush your teeth gently at least 4 hours before your appointment (avoiding your gums) and do not floss. Grab something to eat before your appointment (make sure not to eat until 2 hours after your whitening). Then, get ready to kick back and relax during your whitening session!
How Long Does the Application Take?
The full treatment takes about 30 minutes.
How Long Will the Whitening Last?
It really depends on your diet and lifestyle. However, with proper maintenance and periodic touch-up treatments, you can keep your smile looking great for a lifetime.
